When I thought and interpreted the quote “the only thing you got in this world is what you can sell” from Death of a Salesman, I came to a conclusion that this means nothing is free in this world. You must work hard for what you receive. I believe it means that feelings and relationships are worth nothing but trouble and not worth the time you contribute. Also that feeling is always told to be untrue. Feelings find themselves drifting apart and vanishing. Feelings and emotions cannot be sold or bought; instead, they have to be trusted. Trust is something less valued in today’s times as well as in the 1940’s. Family is always defined as love. I think love is what makes a family so special. Love cannot be bought or sold, so I think Willy feels as if love is not important in his story. Willy strives so much on working and having a wealthy family that he forgets he cannot sell love and just buy it when he needs it. I think throughout the story Willy wants a loving family but his mind is off somewhere else. I also feel like Willy works so much that he cannot even define what a true family means. It’s as if having a successful business, you must know who you are hiring. If you choose just a family environment to work for each other, there is already trust lacking and the business will most likely fail. Being successful has always been a priority between times now and before. Being successful is selling something to a company, and the company sees that profit will be made and buying that successful person. Selling makes profit, and, love, emotions, and relationships are not selling products and this is why people find it so hard to sale these things because they cannot be bought. It is extremely hard to define what this means but to me this is what I feel it describes but I always remember that the best things in life cannot be bought or sold but earned with trust.
